Project summary:
Renewable World worked with Nicaraguan partner, blueEnergy to upgrade the facilities of the only medical centre in Monkey Point, a remote and extremely poor off-grid community on the Atlantic Coast. The clinic was only reopened in 2010 due to pressure from the local community to have a nurse posted there, but the facilities were extremely basic. The clinic had no lighting or power so the nurse was unable to store vaccines or other life saving medicines.
Renewable World's Programme Intervention:
Renewable World's input into this programme intervention is through providing social investment and financing to our programme partner blueEnergy.
Country Context:
The Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua encompasses almost half the nation’s land area and yet over 80% of its population lives below the poverty line without access to electricity. For the community living in Monkey Point, a three hour boat trip or ten hour walk if the sea is too rough from the nearest hospital, Renewable Energy doesn’t just light homes and power businesses, it can saves lives!
Project Benefits:
Solar powered lighting allowing for longer opening hours and safe evening treatment of patients at the health centre.
Power for a World Health Organisation (WHO) standard fridge-freezer to store vaccines, snake bite anti-venom and HIV tests and medicine, previously unavailable to the community of Monkey Point.
Power for a nebuliser used to treat asthma and other respiratory diseases.
